History of Grama Panchayat

Mathilakam Grama Panchayat, established in 1964, has a rich history rooted in ancient tribal governance and the Chera kingdom. Over the centuries, the region came under the rule of the Cochin Kingdom, the Zamorin, Tipu Sultan, and later the British until India’s independence in 1947. Known historically as “Thrikkanavaikottam,” Mathilakam was famous as a center of Jain culture and education. The region also played an important role in Kerala’s social and political movements, including the historic “Aaradi Samaram” of 1973. With early institutions like the Sree Narayana Vilasam Library and improved transport routes from 1933 onwards, Mathilakam steadily developed into an important cultural and administrative center.
